Lidl expands value offering to online DVD rental market

Lidl, the discount supermarket, is expanding its range beyond value groceries with the launch of an online DVD rental service.

The service, which will offer 65,000 titles, will rival DVD rental companies such as Lovefilm, Blockbuster and Tesco.

The supermarket says its LidlMovies rental service will be cheaper than its competitors, offering “first class service at the lowest price”.

Lidl claims the rental service is 15% cheaper than Lovefilm, with monthly subscriptions starting at £3.32. It will also offer a 30-day free trial, free home delivery and return and no need for a contract, while the website will include film-related news and features.

Lidl says: “People value Lidl for its quality food offering at rock bottom prices and its DVD rental service will offer the same proposition on a different platform.”
