Orange enables Twitter updates via mobile

Orange has partnered with Twitter to allow its subscribers to send and receive updates and images via their phones.

Orange subscribers can receive Twitter updates free, with uploads charged at standard rates. It claims to be the first operator to allow Twitter subscribers to upload pictures taken from their phones, which are posted on a dedicated Snapshot website with a link automatically published on the social network.

Mark Watts Jones, head of product management for Orange, said it was vital for mobile to play a role in the development of Twitter as the service became increasingly important for real-time search and breaking news.

“We’re delighted to extend the value of the service by bringing it to mobile, enabling our customers to view and update their Twitter streams and giving them the unique ability to upload photos directly via MMS,” he said.
In March Twitter resurrected its free SMS updates service for Vodafone subscribers, followed by a similar deal with O2 in July.
