As part of the “Buy Now- Free Next Time” initiative, customers will be given a coupon at the till point to claim the free item the next time they are in a Sainsbury’s store.
The trial launches tomorrow (18 November) and will run for seven days at 470 Sainsbury’s stores.
Sainsbury’s trial follows the announcement from Tesco in October that it would offer staggered BOGOF deals but Sainsbury’s has beat its rival to implementing the inititative, which is yet to go live in Tesco stores.
Sainsbury’s customer director Gwyn Burr says: “We know that 50% of shoppers take coupons and vouchers with them when they shop, and it’s a really practical way for people to stretch their budgets, especially in the current economic climate. This new coupon promotion, together with the low prices and promotions we already have, means customers will get unbeatable value on the products that are most useful to them.”
It will initially run across two products; Pampers Baby Dry Nappies Carry Pack and Sainsbury’s white baguettes, items that would usually be problematic if offered on BOGOF.
The promotion is subject to restrictions and customers are limited to four items per transaction. The period to redeem the coupon for the free item is capped at two weeks, and it must be claimed by the 8 December.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson says the initiative follows customer feedback and is part of the supermarkets promotional mix and ongoing mission to “make the shopping experience better for customers.”
Sainsbury’s will measure customer reaction to the promotion and says it will “definitely consider” expanding the promotion.
