Burger is thought to have left the discount retailer last week according to European reports, but the company refused to comment on any staff positions.

His departure follows the shock exit of UK managing director Paul Foley in August. At the time, Aldi said Foley’s departure was made “by mutual consent” and that he was moving on to “pursue new business interests”.

Burger was brought in from his role as chief executive of Aldi Austria to temporarily head up the UK business when Foley left after 20 years with the company.

He has also spent 20 years with Aldi and has worked with the business in Austria, Hungary, Greece, Switzerland and Slovenia.

In October, Aldi appointed Matthew Barnes, head of buying at its Australian operations, to the role of UK managing director.

Prior to joining Aldi’s Australian business, Barnes was a regional director in the UK and oversaw the opening of its first city centre store in Manchester.
