Bolland leaves Morrisons early

Morrisons’ chief executive Marc Bolland, has resigned from his role at Morrisons, effective immediately ahead of joining Marks & Spencer.

Bolland was named as Sir Stuart Rose’s replacement at M&S last month in a move that was widely heralded as a coup for M&S.

He was expected to stay on at Morrisons until the end of the supermarket chain’s financial year in February.

M&S would not comment on whether it meant Bolland would join the high street retailer earlier than planned, and reiterated that the intention was for Bolland to come on board in early 2010.

Morrisons’ chairman Sir Ian Gibson will lead the board and three executive directors will run the supermarket group until a replacement is found.

Morrisons reported a sales increase of 9.1% for the three months to 1 November.
