Daily Express creates paid-for archive
The Daily Express has launched an online archive comprising 1.7m newspaper pages from every edition ever produced.
The publisher will charge £5.95 for unlimited access to content over a 48-hour period.
Users will be able to scan headlines and some pictures, but will be charged for deeper access to archive material, which will reach back to the newspaper’s first edition in 1900.
The Daily Express said it was “still leading the way” with the launch of the service.
In launching the new service the paper added, “Just like its earliest self, the current Daily Express is at the forefront of modern technology. In putting these pages online, it is unlocking the door to the past.”
Although the Daily Express has not, so far, charged for current news content, the charging for archive material reflects a larger trend for changing for online content championed by Express Group rival News international headed by paid content evangelist Rupert Murdoch.
