Sky adds indies to music service

Sky has finalised a deal with independent record label rights body Merlin to offer music from indie labels as part of its Sky Songs service.

Tracks from labels including Cooking Vinyl, Ministry of Sound and Tommy Boy will be available to stream and download as part of the subscription service. Merlin joins the four major labels already on board Sky Songs, which launched in October.

In July rival music service Spotify announced that Merlin represented tracks which accounted for 10% of usage on its service.

Justin Moodie, general manager for Sky Songs, said it was vital to offer a thorough service. “We aim to constantly grow and improve the Sky Songs service and this addition is a welcome step in that direction,” he said.
