Government food strategy focuses on clear labelling

Clearer labelling is the key to a sustainable food production and a healthier nation, according to the Government’s new food strategy.

Speaking at the launch of Food 2030 at the Oxford Farming Conference on Tuesday, environment and food secretary Hilary Benn said “people power” could revolutionise the way food is produced and sold. But he added that this would require better information on the impact products have on health and the environment, such as simplified onpack labelling and in-store advice.

Dax Lovegrove, head of business and industry at conservationorganisation WWF, said Food 2030 provides a “great opportunity” to
engage customers in smart ways that connect them to key issues.”This could involve telling the story of sustainable products – a tactic that can be very inspiring and lead to improved customer loyalty.”
