EDF sponsors Fuel Poverty Day

EDF Energy is sponsoring National Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, which takes place today, to promote the support available for vulnerable people to keep warm at home in the winter months.

The awareness-raising day has been organised by National Energy Action (NEA) and is supported by government chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson and Dr Mirriam Stoppard OBE.

The aim of the day is to drive awareness of the grants and schemes available to help people insulate their homes and improve heating systems to avoid deaths and ill health caused by homes being too cold.

The government has announced that energy companies must make £300m available each year by 2014 to help the most vulnerable households with their energy bills.

EDF Energy’s MD for energy sourcing and customer supply Martin Lawrence, says: “EDF Energy is supporting Fuel Poverty Awareness Day because it is really important that we raise awareness of the help and support that is out there to help people with their energy bills.

EDF was the first energy provider to set up a discounted tariff for fuel poor customers with its Energy Assist scheme and the EDF Energy Trust which has awarded more than £13m in grants to individuals and families who are having trouble with their bills.

NEA director of communications Maria Wardrobe says: “We’re using this year’s Fuel Poverty Awareness Day to draw attention to the health affects of living in a cold home. It is vitally important to keep your home warm throughout the entire winter and there is support out there if you are worried about your bills. We are delighted a major energy supplier, EDF Energy, is supporting Fuel Poverty Awareness Day.”
