BSkyB and Nokia have signed a deal to offer live coverage of Sky Sports and Sky News on selected handsets.

The companies say the new service “is set to revolutionise the viewing habits of Nokia phone owners… with real time sports, entertainment and news services whilst on the move”.

The first compatible handsets are the Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and Nokia 5530, with the Nokia 5230 and X6 versions following shortly. A version of the application with non-live mobile TV features will also be available on 10 further handsets.

The company says it aims to ensure consumers never miss their favourite show. Using the service, Sky customers can watch Sky Sports live on their phone, including all televised Barclays Premier League matches, goal and match highlights and breaking Sky News headlines.

Customers can also link up their favourite programmes straight to their home Sky+ box using a Remote Record service

Rupert Englander, Nokia’s head of services marketing UK, says: “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to help make life easier for our consumers. Modern lifestyles have driven demand for great mobile content and services on-the-go and it’s great to know that this app will make a real difference to Nokia users. The partnership with Sky is just one of many that will bring everyday products and services to the pockets of our customers- all accessible quickly and easily through the Ovi Store.”

David Gibbs, general manager for mobile at Sky, adds: “We’re delighted to be working with Nokia to give millions more people the chance to enjoy TV on the move. The success of Sky Mobile TV has shown there’s a real appetite for innovative services that allow customers to choose when and where they watch.”

Earlier today, Eurosport launched its first iPhone app, kicking off with live coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games and last week the BBC said it was creating an iPhone app that would let users watch all World Cup matches broadcast by the BBC live on their handsets.

Nokia also recently teamed up with b@TV to allow X6 handset owners live streaming from their website, home to clubbers, festival goers and the best DJs, events and venues in the world.
