UEFA appoints marketing chief amid commercial restructure

UEFA, European football’s governing body, has appointed Guy-Laurent Epstein as its director of marketing amid a restructure of the organisation’s commercial operations.

The appointment follows the separation of the body’s wholly-owned subsiduary UEFA Events into two separate units, events and marketing.

Epstein, currently head of media sales and a former FIFA marketing executive, will head the marketing unit with overall responsibility for marketing and commercial activities.

UEFA manages and markets the Champions and Europa League club tournaments as well as four-yearly international tournament the European Championships. The body renewed agreements with several Champions League sponsors last year including Unicredit, Heineken, Sony and Mastercard.Car marque Seat is the principle sponsor of the Europa League.

News of Epstein’s appointment comes as it emerges that head of marketing Philippe Le Floc’h is to leave UEFA after ten years following the restructure.

Martin Kallen has been named director of operations for UEFA Events and will be responsible for all club and international competitions as well as all other UEFA events.
