Sky loses exclusive mobile football rights to ESPN

BSkyB’s Sky Sports has lost the exclusive rights to distribute highlights of the Barclays Premier League via mobile phones for the next three seasons to ESPN.

Disney-owned ESPN now has the exclusive rights to broadcast highlights of all 380 games from England’s top-flight football league over the next three seasons. ESPN said it will announce specific price plans and products that will use these rights in the forthcoming weeks.

This will involve further negotiations with the UK’s mobile network operators which had previously agreed similar tie-ups with Sky Sports.

Richard Scudamore, Premier League chief executive, said, “Mobile is an increasingly important technology as hand-held devices become ever more sophisticated, therefore a good service with a strong partner is important to us both in terms of accessibility and complementing live coverage.”
