Porsche has promoted Bernhard Maier to head up sales and marketing on the company’s board.

Maier, previously chairman of the management of Porsche Deutschland, is taking over the top position in the sales and marketing division with immediate effect. He has been at the company since 2001.

He replaces Klaus Berning, who is leaving the company with immediate effect at his own request.

Last year, carmaker Porsche announced it had agreed a merger with fellow German manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) after weeks of talks between the two firms’ management.

The luxury carmaker said in a statement that it wanted to see the “creation of an integrated car manufacturing group”.

The move was intended to unite the 10 VW brands under one roof, however the deal is currently facing significant legal and tax risks.

Porsche says that despite setbacks, it still plans to merge the two companies next year.
