Gloucestershire club side Slaughter United will play with the name of the band on their shirts after bass player Guy Berryman agreed to pay for new kit and equipment.

The club’s secretary, Paul Heming, is said to have emailed Berryman after finding the musician had sponsored a nearby rugby club at Stow.

The deal is reportedly worth £750 with a condition of the agreement that the side’s tops carry the name of the band.

It is said the club, which plays in the Gloucestershire County League Division 4, needs to raise about £2,000 per year to survive.

The band are said to be keen players with singer Chris Martin an ex-player at Gloucestershire side Great Rissington.

Heming told the BBC “I think there’s probably more closet Coldplay fans than we were aware of since everyone’s come out of the woodwork asking if they can get cheap tickets.”
