Car sales rise but Toyota continues to falter
New car sales in the UK rose 13.5% in May, compared with the same month a year ago, but Toyota is continuing to see sales fall according to the latest industry figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The number of new cars sold in the UK during the month was 153,095 compared with 134,858 in May last year, the eleventh successive monthly rise.
Toyota has continued to suffer from the recall crisis that engulfed them earlier this year. The marque is due to launch a cross platform pan-European campaign featuring its employees as part of its drive to reassure customers.
Full year registrations are expected to dip slightly as scrappage boost comes to an end and fleet and private markets show positive gain in May up by 16.0% and 12.3% respectively.
“May was another good month for the UK new car market, although we expect the coming months to be extremely challenging,” says Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.
“It is essential that the upcoming emergency budget promotes consumer and business confidence to maintain economic recovery.”
