TalkTalk launches online drive to boost autism awareness

TalkTalk is partnering with autism charity TreeHouse to launch a virtual “Talkathon” in a bid to improve public understanding of autism, and to raise vital funds for autism.

The Talkathon, backed by a host of celebrities including Nick Hornby, Keith Duffy, Matt Lucas and Theo Walcott, has been created by CHI&Partners and will allow Facebook and Twitter users to attach speech bubbles containing one of five facts about autism to profile photos, tweets and emails.

As part of the initiative, TalkTalk has also pledged to donate £1 to every ’talker’ who takes part in the Talkathon, up to £150,000.

Talkathon aims to raise awareness and understanding of autism by spreading facts and destroying myths through social media networks.

Tristia Clarke, commercial director, TalkTalk, says: “It is clear that raising awareness of autism and destroying the many myths surrounding the condition will have a positive impact on the lives of those affected by it and that is why we are proud to support the world’s first virtual Talkathon.”

Jolanta Lasota, chief executive, TreeHouse, adds: “Despite autism affecting one in 100 children in the UK. TreeHouse’s survey proved there is a huge lack of understanding of how prevalent autism is and there are several misconceptions of what it is. The Talkathon will not only get more people talking about autism, it will also go a long way to raising awareness and understanding of autism – both of which will undoubtedly improve the lives of families affected by autism.”

TalkTalk has worked in partnership with TreeHouse since 2002 and has raised over £750,000 in that time.
