Nokia begins sortie on smartphone market with handsets launch
Nokia has unveiled the handsets it will use to fight back in the high-end smartphone market.
Speaking at the Nokia World exhibition in London, Niklas Savander, Nokia’s executive VP of markets, said the devices’ location-based functionality would play a key role in the fightback in a market increasingly dominated by devices using Android and Apple operating systems.
The company announced three new smartphones, the Nokia E7, C7 and C6, and officially unveilled its flagship Nokia N at the event. All will use the Nokia-backed Symbian operating system.
“Today our fight back to smartphone leadership shifts into high gear,” said Savander. “Despite new competition, Symbian remains the most widely used smartphone platform in the world. Our new family of smartphones introduced today feature the all-new Symbian OS, rewritten to be faster, easier to use, more efficient and more developer friendly.”
Nokia also unveiled a new beta version of it’s Ovi Maps service, which has improved information on public transport facilities and features real-time traffic alerts and parking restrictions in major cities around the world.
In addition, the maps services have improved search capabilities and let users share their location via text messages or email to other browser-enabled phones.
