News International plans content models across titles

News International is looking to bundle content across its titles to encourage subscriptions when its paywall rollout is complete.

According to reports, the publisher – owned by News Corp, which earlier this year acquired news aggregation software Skiff and invested in payment platform Journalism Online – is in the latter stages of development of a platform that will bundle content and subscriptions across News of the World, The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times from online, mobile and tablet devices.

The platform will let users access content across the titles for a price that would be cheaper than if paid for separately. Although the offer would no doubt offer readers better value, it could reduce paid subscriptions to individual titles.

Like existing US models such as Ongo – which offers content bundling or cherry-picking across titles from The New York Times Company, The Washington Post and USA Today publisher Ganett – News International is looking to get other publishers on board.

News of the World will implement its paid-content model later this month. The tabloid title is set to relaunch and will begin charging readers £1 a day for access or a four-week subscription for £1.99.

News International declined to comment.
