Online grocery, currently worth £4.8bn, will grow to £9.5bn by 2015, according to the IGD’s Grocery Retail Outlook report.
The report says that online grocery shopping will account for 5.2% of the market by 2015, up from its current 3.2% share.
Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive, IGD “Retailers are driving online growth through new developments, such as ’click and collect’, introducing smart phone apps and building stores specifically to cater for online orders.”
Separately, business advisory firm Deloitte has revealed that online retail is set to account for 20% of the total retail market in the next decade, boosted by the uptake of smartphones and tablet devices that make it easier to shop on the move.
Online sales are expected to grow 15% this Christmas compared with total retail sales growth of approximately 1%, Deloitte adds.
During December, online is set to double its annual share and account for 20% (£8bn) of the total spend during the month.
Mobile devices are also expected to boost Christmas Day sales.
