The European Commission has extended the inquiry deadline, from 22 December to 8 December, to decide on the deal after a receiving an offer from the media company, it says.

No details were given of News Corp’s offer to alleviate competition concerns but it is not thought that it involves any sale of assets.

The Rupert Murdoch-led media company wants to buy the 61% of the pay-TV company it does not already own.

UK broadcast regulator Ofcom is also investigating the bid, and is expected to report back to Business Secretary Vince Cable by the end of the year.

Media groups including the BBC and BT wrote to Cable in October asking him to intervene and halt the deal, claiming it “could threaten the future of other UK press and TV groups.”
