CNN switches to ad-funded apps

CNN has launched a free version of its iPad app and has standardised its global pricing model favouring an ad-funded strategy.

The app will cover breaking news in text and video and include picture galleries that can be shared either via email or Facebook.

Users can also switch the editorial preference of the app to an international or US focus.

Louis Gump, vice president of CNN Mobile, says: “The app was built from the ground up with our customers in mind and we’re proud of the new CNN experience we’ve created for the device.”

In addition, CNN has dropped the $1.99 fee it charged US iPhone app users. This brings its iPhone revenue model in line with the ad-funded revenue model it implements around the world.

CNN debuted its iPhone app globally in July and has been boosting its appeal to international audiences by signing up video partners in Europe
