Alcohol industry calls on marketers to judge irresponsible ads

The Portman Group is overhauling the way it appoints members to its Independent Complaints Panel by advertising for new recruits.

Members of the panel, which rules on complaints made about alcohol marketing under the alcohol industry body’s code, were appointed by chairman Sir Richard Tilt but are being advertised for the first time.

Applicants with marketing and industry experience are being sought.

David Poley, chief executive of the Portman Group, which provides the secretariat function for the Panel, says: “The Independent Complaints Panel is the ’jury’ in our system and has a proven record of rational, consistent decision-making.

“While the appointments process has worked very well until now, I believe that advertising the vacancies is in line with the principles of openness and transparency to which we aspire in our administration of the Code.”
