Apple’s Jobs confirms leave of absence
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is to take medical leave of absence, with COO Tim Cook taking charge of the company’s day-to-day running.
Jobs is said to have confirmed the news in an email to employees, in which he also announced his intention to return.
“At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company,” read the email.
“I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day-to-day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011,” Jobs added.
The revelation of Jobs’ departure came a day before Apple is set to publicly announce its FY11 first quarter results.
He undertook a similar six-month leave of absence in 2009 to recover from a liver transplant.
