The voluntary recall affects 15,500 Toyota Avensis and 3,100 Lexus IS 250 models in the UK.
Toyota says that there have been no reports of accidents or complaints in the UK, but is responding to reports in other markets.
Toyota says it is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to contact registered owners by letter to advise them on repairs.
Jon Williams, managing director of Toyota GB says: “We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of all our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption.”
Toyota has issued 14 separate recalls in the past year, affecting 12 million vehicles.
Despite being plagued by safety fears and product recalls, Toyota was recently named the world’s biggest car-maker of last year.
It launched a series of reassurance campaigns and communications to rebuild trust in the brand.
It was fined a record $32.4m (£20.8m) in the US last year for its handling of the recall.
