Google launches publisher payments platform

Google has launched its much anticipated publisher payments platform, Google One Pass.

German publishers Axel Springer AG, Focus Online and Stern.de are among the first publishers to adopt the platform, rivalling that launched yesterday by Apple.

Google One Pass lets publishers set their own prices and terms for digital content. Unlike Apple’s 30% revenue cut, Google One Pass will only take 10%.

According to Google’s blog: “With Google One Pass, publishers can maintain direct relationships with their customers and give readers access to digital content across websites and mobile apps. Publishers can customise how and when they charge for content while experimenting with different models to see what works best for them – offering subscriptions, metered access, ’freemium’ content”

The payments system also facilitates micropayments for single articles across web or mobile apps, and recognises One Pass subscribers accessing content on a number of devices.

It will let publishers give existing print subscribers free, or discounted, access to digital content. Payments are processed using Google Checkout.

Google One Pass is available for publishers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US.

Future Publishing, meanwhile, has become one of the first publishers to use Apple’s new platform by launching an in-app subscription service for T3 magazine’s iPad edition.

T3, Future Publishing’s technology title, is one of the first titles to offer subscriptions to its iPad edition, now that Apple has allowed in-app magazine subscriptions.
