Sky to replace magazines with subscriber emails

BSkyB is to close its Sky Sports and Sky Movies magazines and reduce the frequency of market leader Sky Magazine as part of a shift to communicate with its customers digitally.

From 1 July Sky Magazine will condense from a monthly magazine to a quarterly and the bi-monthly Sky Sports and Sky Movies magazines will close, putting around 20 jobs at risk.

However, new digital jobs will be created to develop a new weekly email with links to Sky content and programme highlights that will be sent to its customers from August.

Sky says the new weekly email will enable the broadcaster to deliver more engaging and timely information on its content.

A Sky spokesman says: “As a brand which sits at the heart of digital entertainment and communications, online increasingly offers more immediacy, engagement and interaction.”

Sky Movies Magazine is produced by Future Publishing, while Sky Sports and Sky Magazine are both produced in-house.

Sky Magazine is currently the largest-distributed magazine in the UK, circulating an average 7.3 million copies a month, according to the latest ABC figures.

Sky Sports magazine has an average net circulation of 4.3 million and Sky Movies magazine circulates 3.6 million copies on average each month.
