The iPad-only newspaper will be available to download via iTunes although it is not yet certain whether a localised UK version will also be launched.

NewsCorp’s chief digital officer Jon Miller told the Abu Dhabi Media Summit today (16 March) that The Daily will experience its “moment of truth” next week when it starts charging subscribers for content.

The Daily launched in the US last month, pitched as an “all media” news product with content spanning text, audio, image, social media and video.

Until now it has been free of charge but US subscription will cost 99c (61p) per week or $39.99 (£24.97) a year as of next week.

NewsCorp has not yet released information on how many people have downloaded The Daily app to date.

The European launch date will depend on the roll out of Apple’s controversial subscription model. Publishers have expressed concerns about Apple charging 30% for every app subscription downloaded from its store.

The Daily is the first app to collect data on subscribers through its in-app technology.
