The appointment of Rachel Childs and Martin Narey to the watchdog’s Council comes amid a period of political scrutiny that has seen the Prime Minister describe some marketing to children as “irresponsible”.
Reg Bailey, chief executive of Christian charity Mothers’ Union was asked to review current codes on marketing to children by the Government in December.
Childs and Narey will sit on both the broadcast and non-broadcast councils as independent members. IPA president Hamish Pringle and media veteran Ray Gallagher have also been appointed to sit on the Council.
ASA chairman Lord Smith of Finsbury says of the new Council members: “It is important that we have the right mix of skills and perspectives to help us get these decisions right. Our newest members have a broad range of expertise and I have no doubt they will make an invaluable contribution to our work and ensuring advertising standards remain high.”
The four new appointees replace retiring Council members.
