The publisher, whose magazines include The Week, Maxim and Viz, will retain its iPad apps but will also offer apps for an “extensive” range of other platforms such as Blackberry and HP.

Last week, the publisher launched what it claims is the first digital magazine on the Android operating system in the UK.

IGizmo, which is already published on iPad and a dedicated website, is available to download for free on a variety of Android tablet devices and works on an ad-funded business model. However, there are plans to introduce paid-for specials.

Dennis Media Factory commercial and retail director Martin Belson says: “We have taken iGizmo to Android tablets before the iPhone because in 2011 there is set to be significant growth in ownership of Android tabloid devices and we feel it is important iGizmo is available to this new audience.”

Tablet manufacturers sold about 20 million devices worldwide during 2010 and that number is expected to increase by 181% next year, according to research firm Gartner.

Belson says Dennis is helping advertisers use the tablet format to create interactive pages within magazines, using a combination of video, image galleries and links.

He adds: “In terms of innovation, all ads are created to make the most of the platform, but HTC, Disney, Range Rover, Toyota and Sonos have shown real innovation and understanding of the platform.”
