Nickelodeon assists Government on pre-school curriculum

Nickelodeon is assisting the government with its Early Years Foundation Stage review that will inform the 2013-2014 pre-school curriculum.

The broadcaster, along with other education-led companies and charities, is sharing its insight on preschool development from its Nick Jr children’s channel to help enhance the pre-school learning experience.

The government will also advise Nick Jr about the specific skill sets it should emphasise on air.

As a result, Nick Jr will be refreshed this summer to feature more National Curriculum-led educational content and will push its new strapline – ’A smart place to play’.

Nickelodeon UK managing director Tina McCann says: “We have always been about learning through fun and ’A smart place to play’ is a smarter tagline for us to use to help us move forward.”

The coalition government is increasingly turning to media owners and brands to help communicate public information. The Department of Health is reportedly working with the producers of CBeebies show LazyTown to help push healthy eating messages.

The channel’s revamp will include new idents and other short-form TV content.

The Nick Jr website will also be redesigned and will include functionality changes to make it more “pre-school friendly” in the summer. It will feature larger images and a ’cleaner’ design.

McCann says: “The site is intended for children and parents to use together but we found kids love to be empowered and use the mouse themselves, so we are making it easier to click on things and navigate the site.”
