Huffington Post to launch UK edition

The Huffington Post is to launch a UK edition later this year as part of a wider European expansion strategy.

AOL to acquire the Huffington Post

The US based news and analysis site was bought by AOL last month for $315m (£199m) creating Huffington Post Media Group.

The local site will include a UK homepage and editorial content tailored for a British audience. It is likely that content will be produced by AOL’s 100 existing UK journalists, but the media firm could look to take on more UK based editorial staff.

AOL has axed around 900 editorial staff, around 20% of its workforce, since the acquisition of The Huffington Post was announced as it restructures to integrate it with AOL’s editorial and video sites.

The combined media group aims to reach an estimated combined audience of 270 million.

The Huffington Post also plans to launch other international editions targeting France and Brazil.

The title was founded in 2005 by Arianna Huffington and reached almost 25 million unique monthly visitors to its site in December, according to comScore.
