Microsoft names chief marketer

Microsoft has appointed Chris Capossela to head a new business unit responsible for marketing and service development across its entire product range.

Capossela will oversee marketing and advertising for the Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox and Office brands as well as leading its newly formed consumer channels group, which brings together its retail, mobile and distribution teams.

He will work with partners to identify and create “new business opportunities and deliver exciting consumer experiences”, Microsoft says in a statement, and report directly to chief operating officer Kevin Turner.

The decision to bring responsibility for marketing and consumer channel management under Capossela’s leadership comes a week after it emerged that Mich Matthews is to retire after 22 years at the company. Mathews will work with Capossela until she leaves.

Capossela, a 20-year veteran of Microsoft, was previously senior vice president in its Office division. He was responsible for marketing brands such as Microsoft Office, Office 365, SharePoint and Exchange.

He oversaw the rollout of the Make It Great campaign for Office 2010.
