Glasgow 2014, the organising committee for the next Commonwealth Games, has named the person responsible for overseeing the promotion and protection of the brands.

It has appointed Martin Reynolds, currently head of marketing for Edinburgh’s Festivals to take the role of head of marketing and advertising.

He will also develop a strategy for the image and look of the XX Commonwealth Games; the creation of the advertising campaigns that will launch and support the ticket sales programme and the creation and launch of a number of brand assets, such as the official Games tartan and the Games mascot.

He takes up the position in June and reports to director of communications and marketing Gordon Arthur.

The brand identity and mascots for the London 2012 Olympics both came under fire after their initial unveiling. Stringent rules are in place to prevent unofficial sponsors from capitalising on any association with the Olympics.

The Commonwealth Games were last hosted in the UK by Manchester in 2002 and are credited with regenerating the city and boosting the local economy.
