Google revamps Android Market

Google has announced a revamp of its Android Market aimed at improving app discovery and making a dent to Apple’s app leadership.

The refresh includes ’editor’s choice’, ’top apps’ chart and ’trending apps’ sections, which are now live on the web-based Android portal and will soon be available on the mobile version.

The announcement was made via a post on the official Google Mobile Blog, where the company also revealed that more than 4.5bn Android apps have been installed to date.

Android’s App Market has often come under criticism for being difficult to navigate, due to the sheer scale of unofficial apps on its open platform.

Fernando Delgado, Android Market product manager, says: “Whether you’re looking for the most popular apps, hot new apps or just the very best apps available, we want to help make sure that you find what you’re looking for.”

At its annual I/O conference earlier this week, Google revealed that it is activating 400,000 Android devices a day. It is also launching a cloud-based movie rental service to rival Apple’s iTunes.
