AV decisions expose lack of leader skills

The Debate

The Secret Marketer’s column ’AV-style marketing has ruined decision-making’ (MW 5 May) raises some interesting points. Businesses do indeed need strong leaders and managers to drive growth and improve performance. However, there is often too much emphasis placed on a purely academic route and perhaps not enough consideration is given to leadership and management capabilities.

While MBAs are extremely valuable, they are often not the complete package and can lack the management skills required to impact on an organisation’s performance.

Leadership development is essential, but the UK still lacks the leadership and management skills other competing economies have. While some organisations recognise the impact on business performance that leadership and management training can have, many still fail to realise the potential that it can unlock.
