BT hires new sustainability chief

BT has named Niall Dunne as its new chief sustainability officer, following the departure of Chris Tuppen last year.

Tuppen’s appointment in the mid-nineties made BT the one of the first FTSE 100 companies to appoint a board-level sustainability chief.

Dunne is a former managing director of Saatchi & Saatchi Sustainability for Europe, Middle East and Africa and will work alongside BT’s CSR director Caroline Sheridan. He is expected to advise the senior management team on “the science and impact of climate change, sustainable development and strategy and [relevant] public policy dialogue with governments.”

BT, which is one of the top ten largest energy consumers in the UK, has set a target to cut the ’carbon intensity’ of its business globally by 80% on 2007 levels, by next year.

As part of this drive BT aims to generate 25% of its UK energy from renewable energy sources by 2016, for which it intends to build its own wind farms.

Dunne previously worked for Accenture, where he founded its climate change and sustainability practice.
