Sainsbury sales get bunting boost

Sainsbury’s says Easter and Royal Wedding celebrations helped lift sales in its first quarter, outstripping the performance of rival Tesco.

The supermarket chain reported like for like sales, excluding the impact of new stores and income from petrol sales, increased by 1.9% in the 12 weeks to 15 June. Yesterday (14 June) Tesco reported a 0.1% drop in its first quarter.

Sainsbury’s says customers bought 300 miles of bunting, 159,000 flags and 49,000 mugs to mark the 29 April wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Hot cross bun sales over Easter increased 29% year on year, the company adds.

Growth for its own-label ranges – basics and the recently relaunched Taste the Difference premium range also fuelled growth, Sainsbury’s adds, with volume and sales growth.

Total sales, including income from new stores and petrol sales, increased 7.3%. The number of customer transactions grew 5% to 22 million.
