The social networking giant is understood to be weeks away from launching a free app specifically designed for the iPad, according to The New York Times.

The app has been in production for a year and will let users shoot and upload videos directly from the device.

The report comes days after Facebook was reported to be working on a HTML5-based web app. This will work in browsers and is part of an initiative called Project Spartan.

A HTML5 approach will reduce Facebook’s reliance on creating mobile apps native to specific device types, such as Android, BlackBerry and iOS.

A statement from Facebook regarding Project Spartan said, “We’re constantly working on new features and enhancements to our products but have nothing new to announce at this time.”
