The free-to-use website has been designed by digital agency TH_NK to create an online experience to complement reading the series of seven Harry Potter books.

Rowling has written new material about the characters, places and objects in the stories, which she says will “inform, inspire and entertain readers as they journey through the storylines of the books”.

Pottermore will also include an online shop so that fans can exclusively purchase the long-awaited Harry Potter eBooks

The site will be available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish from October 2011, with more languages to follow.

A competition will launch on 31 July, Harry’s birthday, which will allow the first million people that register to gain early entry to Pottermore and help developers shape the final stages of the website.

Talking about the partnership with Sony, Rowling says: “I am very protective of Harry and have always been very selective with any new initiatives, but I am totally committed to making this partnership with Sony and this wonderful new website a success.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is released in the UK in July.
