The site stocks 15,000 products, such as consumer electronics and sporting equipment, and users can search for items via category type or brand name. Sainsbury’s says it will accommodate grocery orders shortly.

Tanya Lawler, Sainsbury’s director of digital and cross channel, says: “This new mobile shopping site is a big step towards Sainsbury’s becoming a true cross channel retailer.”

The click and collect service is currently available in 400 stores but will be rolled out to more than 800 by Christmas, according to Sainsbury’s. The function lets users place a non-food order via their mobile phone by 2pm for next-day collection from the store of their choice.

Sainsbury’s debuted on mobile last year with the launch of an iPhone app that lets users collect Nectar Points. The app, and subsequent versions for other operating systems, has been downloaded over 250,000 times since.
