Wet weather and sales boost July spending

High street spending was steady in July thanks to mid season sales and new lines, according to BDO’s monthly high street tracker.


Total sales were up 2.6% in July, driven by fashion sales which increased 3.7% thanks to cold weather which brought forward the demand for autumn ranges.

Many fashion retailers also launched early sales in June to encourage shoppers to part with their cash.

Non-fashion sales increased 1.1% with luxury and beauty categories reporting strong performance, while homeware sales fell 2.1% during the month as consumers continue to reign in big ticket purchases.

Non-store sales, which includes online, phone and catalogue sales increased 39.9%, driven by online fashion stores.

Don Williams, national head of retail and wholesale at BDO LLP says: “The figures show consumers will continue to spend with retailers who can offer exciting products and promotions supported by consumer-orientated service.

“The retailers doing this can have the confidence to continue investing in their multi-channel offering and on quality retail sites in the best locations.”
