MyVoucherCodes bolsters marketing to take on Groupon

MyVoucherCodes.co.uk owner Markco Media has appointed its first head of marketing as it looks to differentiate from rivals such as LivingSocial and Groupon in the growing international social commerce market.

Martine Parnell, former head of Genes Reunited at Friends Reunited, will oversee the company’s UK marketing and mobile division as part of an expansion strategy to double the size of the business.

MyVoucherCodes claims to be the top discount site in the UK and sits in the Top 5 in the US and in France and Germany.

The company is currently expanding its mobile coupon business following the acquisition of location based discount voucher business Vouchacha and says 10% of its UK traffic now comes from mobile devices – up from 2% earlier this year.

Markco Media is rolling out its discount codes business into 10 regions across Europe, Australia and Latin America and plans to launch in Asia at the end of the year. The company also operates the social commerce site Groupola.com.

The company plans to significantly increase its marketing and mobile division with social media, SEO and email marketers, as well as its international division.

The company operates as Codespromotion in France, TopGutscheinCode in Germany, CouponCodes4U in the US and Cupom de Descontos in Brazil.

“There are a lot of copycat businesses internationally but our business is advanced – we’ve been through all the learning. Competition is healthy and helps raise the market and breed innovation,” says Mark Pearson founder and chairman of Markco Media.

Separately, eConversions – which owns rival disocunt site Vouchercodes.co.uk in the UK and Gutschein-Codes in Germany – has been acquired by US coupon company WhaleShark Media.
