David Lloyd is to invest £2.5m into the expansion of DL Kids’ and upgrading the kids’ facilities under the brand name at its regular fitness centres.

The group currently has two DL Kids facilities. The first opened as a trial in Raynes Park in January 2010. The company now hopes to add four by the end of this year and develop another two sites in 2011.

The first site outside the UK will also open in Barcelona in September this year.

David Lloyd head of family programming Sarah Hobbs says that research shows children who get involved in regular exercise at an early age are more likely to carry on being active into adulthood.

The company is also trying to develop its programme for children aged 11 and over who are more at risk of dropping out of regular exercise.

The group has seen 3% growth in junior members since the beginning of 2011.

A recent report in medical journal The Lancet warned that almost half of adults in Britain could be classified as obese within the next 20 years.
