HP reverses decisions to sell off PC division

HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman has reversed the company’s previous decision to sell of its PC division, just weeks after joining the technology firm.

HP announced in August that it would spin of the computing and mobile business and focus on software after making its £7bn bid for British software company Autonomy.

The announcement came just days after it revealed a multi-million pound celebrity studded marketing campaign to support the launch of its first tablet device.

The company says that a further strategic review under Whitman “detailed the significant extent to which PSG contributes to HP’s solutions portfolio and overall brand value.”

Whitman says: “HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees. HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

Whitman joined from eBay in September, replacing CEO Leo Apotheker who had only been in the role a year. During his time the companies market value plummeted $60bn (£39bn).
