Channel 4 is to step up the development of online games based on television shows, following the appointment of its first ever games “champion”.

Colin MacDonald joins the broadcaster as games commissioning editor and will responsible for launching games that complement TV shows, or have the potential to be turned into shows themselves.

Channel 4 will be hoping the appointment will be able to build on its already successful cross-platform gaming properties such as The Million Pound Drop, Deal or No Deal and The Bank Job, which hit 1.7 million online plays in one week recently.

MacDonald will report into convergent formats commissioner Anna Cronin and will be based in Glasgow.

Head of Channel 4 Online Richard Davidson-Houston says: “This appointment is another step towards becoming a partner of choice for independent creative voices from a range of disciplines and from around the UK.”

Earlier this week Channel 4 announced it was to launch 30 multiplatform-themed events across the UK in a bid to discover new digital and converged TV content ideas and promote how technology is changing audience behaviour.
