BT’s MyDonate replaces JustGiving as Great North Run sponsor

BT’s MyDonate is replacing JustGiving as the online fundraising sponsor of the Great North Run as the telco looks to raise awareness of the charity service it launched in April.

GreatNorthRun

MyDonate will be the official online fundraising partner for the Bupa Great Run Series and the British Gas Great Swim series, which include numerous mass-participation events across the country.

BT will use the sponsorship to emphasise how it is different from other online giving platforms. Claimed differences include offering charities set up and associated administration of their accounts without cost.

Last year, participants across both the Great Run and Great Swim series raised more than £50m for charity, but BT says had they used MyDonate as their donation and fundraising service, they would have raised an extra £2.5m.

MyDonate has helped to raise more than £30m for good causes and signed up more than 2,000 charities since its April launch.

Separately, BT is also in the news for suing Google for allegedly infringing six of its key patents on the search giant’s operating system Android.

If BT wins the dispute, it could claim a loyalty on every Android smartphone sold, a bill that would run into the billions for Google.

Elsewhere, the patent war also rages on between Apple and rival HTC.

The US International Trade Commission has found that HTC infringed one of Apple’s patents, relating to technology that helps users click to call.

HTC phones using the technology have been banned by the trade agency, although the ban does not come into effect until April, meaning the company has time to make modifications to its technology before the ruling would make an impact on sales.
