PlayStation Network to become ‘Sony Entertainment Network’

Sony is to rebrand its PlayStation Network as it looks to better integrate the gaming service with all of its other entertainment devices.

The Sony Entertainment Network will allow gamers access to other digital services around its TVs, PCs, mobiles and music products under their existing log-ins. The rebrand also aims to appeal to consumers outside the gaming category.

In an e-mail sent to current PlayStation Network users, Sony says the transition is based on the company’s goal to enhance its “unique digital entertainment offering”.

The e-mail continues: “This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

The PlayStation Network will become the Sony Entertainment Network from 8 February.

The network suffered a global data hack last year, which resulted in the theft of millions of customers’ details and left a dent in Sony’s brand reputation.

Sony’s first ever non-Japanese CEO Howard Stringer announced he was to step down earlier this month as the company prepares for a fourth year of net losses. He will be replaced by executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai.
