Sainsbury’s expands mobile offering

Sainsbury’s is to launch a mobile-optimised site for its grocery business as it looks to bolster sales from smartphones.

The m-commerce site is expected to launch later this week. It follows the launch of a mobile site for non-food last year and iPhone, Nokia and Android apps in 2010.

Sainsbury’s will be hoping the site helps accelerate online sales growth after recently reporting that sales are increasing by 20% a week year-on-year.

News of the supermarket’s plans follow rival Asda’s launch of an Android app for its grocery business earlier this week and plans for a mobile enabled site for its non-food division in May.

Tesco operates iPad, iPhone, Android, Nokia and Windows Phone apps and offers access to its non-food and Clubcard websites via smartphone. Morrisons, however, does not currently offer online shopping or transactional apps.
