Former Morrisons marketing director Richard Lancaster is to join Poundland as trading director, signalling a move towards a more marketing driven direction for the value retailer.

Lancaster, who looked after corporate marketing and operations at Morrisons, will join the single price retailer in July. He also previously held marketing roles at Sainsbury’s and Netto.

David Coxon, current trading director, will now take on the business development director role and lead the development of Poundland’s ecommerce operation and international expansion.

Poundland currently does not offer a transactional site.

The news comes as Poundland opens its 400th store in the UK.

Poundland CEO Jim McCarthy says: “Richard is a highly regarded senior executive in the retail industry, and securing his appointment demonstrates Poundland’s position in the market place and the exciting trajectory we are on.”

McCarthy previously told Marketing Week that the chain, which relies on word of mouth advertising, would look to launch above the line advertising when it reached around 400 stores.
