Coke and Nike partner to drive eco R&D

Coca-Cola, P&G and Nike are among a group of global brand owners that have vowed to work together to speed the development of sustainable, plant-based bottles, packaging and clothing.

The collaboration will see the companies working together to reduce their impact on the environment and reduce the use of traditional plastics by increasing the use of plant-based materials.
Ford and Heinz are also founding members of the Plant PET Technology Collaborative (PTC).

The PTC hopes to build on Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle, introduced last year, and share R&D efforts to develop commercial solutions across multiple sectors for PET plastic made entirely from plants.

Heinz currently licenses the technology from Coca-Cola for ketchup bottles in the US and Canada.

The initiative is supported by WWF, which says: “Sustainably managing our natural resources and finding alternatives to fossil fuels are both business and environmental imperatives. It’s encouraging to see these leading companies use their market influence to reduce dependence on petroleum-based plastics. We hope other companies will follow their lead.”

Unilever recently called on businesses to work together to find solutions to sustainable business challenges such as changing consumer behaviour, sourcing, production and recycling.
